shreya vuttaluru.
data journalist.

Hello! I'm Shreya (pronounced sh-ray-uh).

I'm an investigative journalist that uses data to tell stories at the Tampa Bay Times. I graduated Cum Laude from the University of Maryland with dual degrees in journalism and political science, and a minor in geospatial information science.

Previously, I was as a fellow on the data team at The Baltimore Banner, where I dug into crime and demographic trends. Before that, I spent six months working on data analysis for a national investigation at The Dallas Morning News and contributed to several projects at the Howard Center for Investigative Journalism.

I'm an alumna of The Diamondback, the University of Maryland's independent student newspaper, where I edited both data and news. I helped develop the paper's first pipeline for fact-checking data analysis, integrated data visualization into our daily news coverage and established best practices for public records requests on our news and data desks. I also spent time writing and managing enterprise projects, including a series I led on campus accessibility, which was featured in a Washington Post column.

I'm comfortable working in R, Python, ESRI platforms, Adobe Illustrator, HTML and CSS. I'm (slowly) learning to code in JavaScript to help make interactive graphics and am brushing up on open source remote sensing softwares. I'm always looking for ways to write better code and make prettier viz.

In the wild, you can find me absorbing the St. Petersburg sunshine, curating Spotify playlists, thinking about cool maps and watching cooking competition shows.
